1999 part 2
• The Indian television star Meghana Reddy (1) is chosen as
Swatch’s ambassadress to India.

• At the prestigious Clio Gala award ceremony in New York (USA)
Swatch receives first prize in the ’best Internet site for consumers’
category.The www.swatch.com site is visited by half a million
surfers every year.

• Summer - Swatch sponsors 6 weeks of summer camps for snow-
boarders at Mount Hood, Oregon (USA).The camps are organised
by the Boardercross International Snowboard Academy.

• To mark the 50th anniversary of the Svviss charity organisation
SOS Villages d’enfants Swatch creates the S0S Kinderdorf (2), part
of the proceeds of which will be used to finance the construction of
a new S0S children’s village in Gopalpur, India. This gents’ model is
launched during the Bucharest Young Symphonic Orchestra’s tour
of nine towns throughout Switzerland sponsored by the president of
the Swiss Confederation, Ruth Dreifuss.

• 2 - 7 August - Munich (Germany) hosts the first heat in the Swatch
Wave Tour 1999, for which a special stadium is constructed in a
park right in the centre of the town.

• 11 - 12 August - Launch of the second Swatch The Club Special
Sun & Moon in Sintra (Portugal) with many members pleased by the
total eclipse of the sun in the northern hemisphere. At the same time
the Swatch Access to Sintra Monte da Lua (3) (hill of the rnoon) is
launched. This model can be used for access to all the town’s
main tourist attractions.

• The world’s first Euro-converter watch is produced by Swatch.
Called Converter (4), this Scuba model comprises 11 rotating
bezels, each of which indicates a different currency.

• 9 September - The Swatch Store on the Corso Buenos Aires in
Milan (Italy) re-opens after a serious face-lift.

• 14 September-The new Swatch .Beat Aluminium (5) line is
presented to the press during a spectacular event set against the icy
eeriness of the Rhône Glacier at the heart of the Swiss Alps.
A nocturnal laser show and an ice grotto are only some of the fea-
tures of this equally extraterrestrial and unforgettable launch.

• 15 September - At a magnificent party in Sydney (Australia) Swatch
celebrates only 1 year to go until the opening of the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games.

• 16 - 19 September - The Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence (Italy)
is taken by storm for the second stop of the Swatch Wave Tour (6)
in this famous Tuscan city. Many ProTeam members attend this
fantastic event as well as 1000 Club members. A Swatch .Beat
Cutback with a special strap is produced in a limited series of 600.
This extraordinary sports event is followed by the ’extraterrestrial’
Iaunch of the new Swatch .Beat Aluminium line.

• 8 October - The famous Italian skier Deborah Compagnoni designs
the Fiocco, a Swatch Access to Bormio, a popular resort in the
Italian mountain region of Valtellina.

• 11 October - Swatch’s publicity spot entitled ’At this moment’ is
awarded first prize in the ’clothing, accessories and fabrics’ category
of the 23rd Key Awards, the famous Italian film fair.The prize is
presented at the Teatro Nuovo in Milan.

• 14 October - Swatch and the French ski-resort Serre-Chevalier join
up to create Eagle Free, a new snow-sports facility right in the centre
of the resort. The crowd of people present are thrilled to meet World
Cup champion skier Luc Alphand.

• The Swatch Switch Mc Twist designed by Swatch ProTeam
member Tony Hawk is launched at the Swatch Store in Santa
Monica, California (USA), in the presence of several other ProTeam
members.

• 30 - 31 October - Many Swatch Stores all round the world celebrate
Halloween with the new Swatch Geisterstund.

• 30 - 31 October - The 1999/2000 FIS downhill skiing and snow-
board World Cup season opens in Tignes (France). Swatch is
official timekeeper, for all World Cup heats all round the world.

• 4 November - The Astra, formerly one of the rnost prestigious
cinemas in Europe, situated right in the centre of Milan, is converted
into a Swatch Store (7). The Swatch Skin Paved in Silver is
launched to mark its inauguration.

• 4 - 14 November - The Hawaiian island of Maui (USA) is the setting
for the 16th prestigious Swatch Aloha Classic (8) windsurfing com-
petition. The members who took up Swatch The Club’s invitation to
go along enjoy an unforgettable experience.

• 12 November - Swatch The Club Switzerland presents Highness of
Zerrnatt
to the press and Gold and Pioneer members, This new
model wili provide access to all the ski-lifts serving this famous
Swiss resort.

• The Swatch Boarder-X World Tour (9) kicks off in Sölden (Austria)
in Arctic temperatures !

• Swatch Taiwan organises a competition for metal sculpture to
mark the launch of the new Swatch Irony collection. Over 8,000
visitors come to see the works on display.

• 1 December -The ’99 X-mas Special Mille Stelle (10) is sells
like hot cakes.

• 31 December - Ninety new Swatch Stores have been
inauguraled during 1999, bringing the total number of Swatch
sales-poinis all round the world to 283.

• 31 December - Swatch The Club has twenty-one Gold Mem-
bers (11)
for 2000.

• 31 December - For the third time running the largest clock in
the world is a main feature at the open-air Swatch Soul City in
Vienna (Austria). Over 100,000 spectators come to enjoy the
start of the new millennium at the Big Wheel in Vienna’s famous
Prater Park.

• 1 January -The rnillennium bug survives 24 hours in the
Swatch .Beat Still Working created specially to mark the start of
the third millennium.
